Six Musicians Who Have Told Politicians to Stop Using Their Music

Posted on: Jun 29, 2016

Recently, we saw The Rolling Stones demand that US presidential candidate Donald Trump stop using their songs during his campaign, claiming the controversial Republican doesn’t have permission.

However, they’re not the first act to take issue with a politician using their music and not even the first to complain about Trump!

We’ve taken a look back at some of the biggest musicians who have complained at politicians using their songs without permission.

Neil Young

As you can imagine, Donald Trump is one of the more complained about politicians in recent history, and last year he found himself in hot water with Neil Young after using his track ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’.

While the singer-songwriter is a Canadian citizen he came out to say that he instead supports outspoken liberal Bernie Sanders.

Trump’s camp responded by stating that they had paid for the right to use the song but wouldn’t be using it any further.

Adele

Showing that while not everyone supports Donald Trump’s policies, pretty much everyone loves Adele, it emerged that Trump has also been using the singer’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’ as his warm-up music.

Adele distanced herself from any affiliation with Trump, although he’s clearly a fan of hers, as he was spotted skipping the queues to a recent concert in New York!

Elton John

Noticing a bit of a trend here? Trump also tried to use Elton John’s 1972 hit Rocket Man at rallies which led Elton to publicly distance himself from the ex-Apprentice host.

Sting

George W. Bush was another politician who had his fair share of critics, although when Sting took issue with him using his song ‘Brand New Day’ he claimed it was less about his political views but more about the fact that as a Brit, Sting didn’t want to get involved in US politics.

In fact, it turned out that he stopped Bush’s opponent Al Gore from using the song as well.

Bruce Springsteen

‘The Boss’ has taken issue with not one, not two but three presidential candidates in his time!

Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and Pat Buchanan all used Springsteen’s classic hit ‘Born in the USA’, which is kind of ironic when you think about the fact that the lyrics are pretty critical of the government!

It all started in Reagan’s successful 1984 campaign (the same year the song was released), and it has been argued that Springsteen has become such an outspoken liberal in the years since because of the incident.

Foo Fighters

Dave Grohl and his band have been quite vocal on certain political issues in the past and were big Obama supporters in the run up to his election in 2008.

As such they took issue with his opponent John McCain using their 1998 song ‘My Hero’ (although technically he is a war hero…).

The Foos were upset that their song had been used especially as it was “written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential.”
